SOCIAL MEDIA : A Beautiful Thing To Have

I have been using social media since 2007 but became an enthusiast just for the past 3 years. So it was friendster days which was definitely very engaging for me as someone not having it in province and as a first year college student. Then Facebook was introduced to me. It was a medium for me to just express my thoughts about anything and everything around me and also to communicate to family and friends who are living outside the country. Then, I observed that most of my online friends hit the like button when my post are about food we ate in province, my creations using photoshop, captured nature views in province and I’m also into topics related to old days, I always brought up those little ways and happenings of good old days which is now popularly termed as “throwback”. I feel happy when I get likes, comments, shares or when my friends get to talk about my facebook posts. Through that, I feel like I find my audience and so I always post photos or talk about things related to those mentioned above up until now.

As a proud member of Davao Bloggers Society, I got the chance to celebrate Social Media Day in advance (June 30 is the exact date of the event) last June 28, 2014 at Mam Bebs Bakeshop located at 1/F CVA Building CM Recto Street, Davao City. This event was sponsored by Davao Bloggers Society, Smart Communications, Inc. , My Skin Essentials, Phils. and Krispy Kreme Phils.

And I quote,

“Mashable launched the event (Social Media Day) in 2010 as a way to recognize the digital revolution happening right before our eyes. Each year, thousands of people organize hundreds of meetups across the globe. From Australia to the Philippines, all the way to Sri Lanka and Morocco, countries come together every June to participate in this global movement.”

Davao bloggers celebrated it with so much fun and give aways. Talks from people who’s into Social media plus games related to social media happened during the event. Overall, it was our group who won and surely everyone enjoyed 🙂

Truely, Social media is now part of the day to day activities of todays generation. But just to present more ideas about social media, the pros and cons and how to be a responsible user, I would like to share videos that may help in better understanding of using social media responsibly.

Hope you take time, watching these.

First video shows writer and director Gary Turk reading a poem which orders people to “look up from your phone, shut down the display, take in your surroundings and make the most of today”.

Second video is an online interview of celebrities using social media as a platform which happened on the exact date of Social Media Day last June 30, 2014 by and was hosted by TechRap’s Michael Josh Villanueva.
The guests for this interview were Jim Paredes, a singer-songwriter of the Apo Hiking Society. Jako de Leon, who is the creator and executive producer of Bogart the Explorer. Son of Joey de Leon. Wongsakorn Patpraparn, also known as Chan, who is one of the administrators of the LowcostCosplay Facebook page.

The second video, has helped me better understand using social media responsibly. Some of the important things I learned after watching it are:

“Social media is a beautiful thing to have.”

“The beauty about online, is you get to find your audience.”

“Social media is the next big instrument for mankind to evolve for free. A more progressive thinking will prevail because of it.”

“The social media world, or the world itself is really full of lonely people who want to connect.”

“It gives us a voice to be heared.”

“When you’re on social media, you are interacting with people. Though its not physical interaction, but still an interaction. It travels fast, you get to see everything at once. You have millions people at a time hearing one thing.”

“You can actually establish relationships with people. You can inspire them, you can make them laugh, you can do whatever you want, you can share your ideas.”

“To keep them engage, you should come in a two message. You come in as your self and then you must trust that people out there are basically good and wants to interact and you bring in an emotional content which is like laughter. Its very powerful and people connect. Or you bring in a powerful idea or you bring in a big what if question that everybody wants to answer.”

“Social media is for free. This freedom should come with responsibility from people themselves.

“Part of being a descent person, you try to hold yourself back. If its funny but its being cruel, just better not post it.”

“You have to come from a true place. You have to really speak your own mind. Some people will not like it, some people will love it. You can’t please everybody. and that’s the beauty of social media. You may have done something really bad, but you can have redemption. People forgive, you just have to explain it.”

“In social media, you have to be clever or smart. You cannot just do something and think its gonna go viral or big. But at the same time, you have to have heart, there has to be a heart in it.”

“Social media is the next big instrument for mankind to evolve for free. A more progressive thinking will prevail because of it.”

“If you’re on social media, try to be as smart, intelligent, funny and sincere as possible.”

“While we do live a lot of our lives online, we still live in the real world. Whatever you do in the real world, let that guide on how you conduct your self online as well. If you wouldn’t do it in person, then don’t do it online. Even if you use social media for fun, let’s use it responsibly and lets think about how we can really push the world forward.”

I hope you also learn something about, using social media responsibly:) Thanks for reading!

P.S. : “You shouldn’t really count the people that you reach, you should reach people that counts.”
